Roller Replacement for Los Fresnos Doors

Most Los Fresnos homes went up around 2007, so the rollers on them are nylon, not steel - and failing for a different reason than older stock nearby.

How We Fix It

  1. Here's the thing about Los Fresnos

The median home here dates to around 2007, which is newer than a lot of what we see closer to Laredo. That means the original rollers on most of these doors are nylon-stem, not the steel wheels you'd find on a door from the 1980s or earlier. Nylon rollers don't rust and they don't scream on the way up - they just wear at the stem bushing until the door starts riding rough in the track, one side at a time usually.

  2. We pull the section the bad roller sits on

Support the door so it doesn't drop on the hinge, and swap the roller out - stem, wheel, and bearing together. If we're out that far (it's 18 miles from our shop), we check the rest of the rollers on the door while we're there, because on a door this age, if one nylon roller has worn out, the others from the same batch are usually close behind. No point making two trips for one door.

  3. We don't replace a roller that still has life left in it just to round out a job

If the other nine are fine, we leave them.

How It Shows Up

On a door built around 2007, a bad roller usually sounds like a thump or a hop as that panel crosses the bend where the vertical track turns horizontal - not a grinding noise, which is what you'd hear on older steel-wheeled stock. You might also notice the door hangs slightly crooked in the opening when it's down, because one roller is riding low in a worn track channel while the others are seated normal.

The climate here plays into this too. Summer heat in this part of the state is severe, and nylon expands and contracts more than steel does across a hot day versus a hot night. On a door that sits closed most of the daylight hours, that cycling is part of what chews up the stem bushing over the years. It's not dramatic - no one's door falls off the track from this - but it is steady, and it's the kind of wear you don't see until the door is already loud.

If your door is jumping at the same spot on the track every time, that's almost always one or two rollers, not the whole set.

Doing It Yourself

Swapping a single roller isn't a bad DIY job if the door is down and you can get the section open enough to slide the old roller out and the new one in - there's hardware for exactly this at any hardware store, and a torx bit and a pair of pliers is most of what you need. The part most people get wrong is doing this on a roller near the bottom corner, where the cable drum and the spring are also doing work. If you pull a bottom-corner roller without securing the door first, the whole panel can shift and that's how fingers get caught.

We also wouldn't recommend doing this yourself if your door is a double - wider doors flex more when a section is open on one roller, and it's easy to bow a panel trying to force the roller back into the track. Single doors are more forgiving.

Honest limitation here: we don't sell roller kits over the counter for people to install themselves. If you want us to look at it, we're coming from Laredo, so it's worth bundling it with anything else that's bothering you about the door - the trip is the same either way.

The Cost of This Job

  1. We don't have a posted price for roller replacement in Los Fresnos specifically

And we're not going to make one up to fill space here. What we can tell you is that this is one of the cheaper repairs a garage door door needs, and on a 2007-era door with nylon rollers, it's usually a straightforward one-panel job rather than something that touches the spring or opener.

  2. Los Fresnos itself is a small pocket

We're talking about roughly three dozen households on the number we have for it - so this isn't a street where we're rolling trucks every week. That's part of why it's worth telling us up front what you're hearing and where on the door it happens; it saves a diagnostic trip when the fix turns out to be one roller.

  3. For the general service across the wider area we cover from Laredo

Questions

Frequently asked

Straight answers about garage door repair in Laredo. Still unsure? Ask us directly.

Why do Los Fresnos doors sound different when a roller goes bad?

Most homes here date to around 2007, so the original rollers are nylon, not steel. Nylon wears at the stem instead of rusting, so it tends to thump or hop at the track bend rather than grind. Steel-wheel doors from older housing stock closer to Laredo make more noise earlier in the wear process.

Do you have a crew based in Los Fresnos?

No. We work out of Laredo and travel the roughly 18 miles out to Los Fresnos for calls. There's no local branch or depot here, so we don't quote a fixed response time for the area - just tell us what the door is doing and we'll work out the trip.

Can I replace just one roller instead of the whole set?

Yes, usually. If only one roller is worn - common when one panel takes more flex than the others - we replace that one and leave the rest. We only recommend replacing the full set if several are worn close together, which does happen on doors from the same build era.
